THE CUSTOMER

The family-owned AJM Packaging opened for business in 1950. Today, the company manages facilities across the Midwest and provides customers with private label and branded paper products, including paper plates, cups, bowls and bags.

THE ENERGY-SAVING CHALLENGE

In 2013, AJM noticed the metal halide and T12 lighting in two of its Michigan facilities were extremely inefficient. With rising energy costs, AJM recognized upgrading the lighting in two of its manufacturing facilities could save the company substantially on electricity, as well as the maintenance costs of frequent bulb changes.

THE SOLUTION

After evaluating all the most efficient and reliable lighting fixtures available including LED lighting, Komuna recommended AJM retrofit its two facilities with 930 highly efficient 185 Watt T8 Fluorescent High Bay fixtures. Komuna engineering team worked with its partners to reduce AJM’s Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) from $.11/kWh to $.085/kWh. Komuna oversaw design, procurement, and installation of the project.

THE SAVINGS

The lighting retrofit has reduced AJM’s energy use by1 MW or 60%. This is resulting in a savings of $95,000 in energy and $11,000 in maintenance a year. By 2015, AJM is expected to receive a 44% return on its investment.
