THE ENERGY-SAVING CHALLENGE

InterContinental Real San Salvador Hotel had notedthat energy costs, especially for hot water, accountedfor 10-15% of all hotel expenses. Implementing solar cogeneration would allow them to reduce energy expenses and at the same time fulfill their environmental commitment, by shrinking the hotel’s carbon footprint.

THE SOLUTION

Working with Cogenra Solar, a provider of distributed solar cogeneration solutions, Komuna implemented a hybrid 122 kilowatt solar cogeneration system. The installation consisted of 48 SunPack modules to produce solar electricity and heat approximately 16,000 liters of hot water daily for showers, laundry, cleaning, and food-preparation. Komuna oversaw design, procurement, and installation of the project, enabling construction to be completed in under six weeks.

THE SAVINGS

The solar installation offsets approximately 24,000 kWh of electricity while decreasing the hotel’s hot water fuel consumption by 120,000 kWh annually. The system is expected to deliver an ROI before 2017.
